Indonesian modest fashion is ready to cater to growing global demand
Indonesian modest fashion is flourishing, and its vast potential aligns with the growing Muslim population. With a distinct emphasis on modesty, Indonesian modest fashion is poised to meet global demand.
Recognising the immense potential of this industry, the Central Bank of Indonesia, through Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival (ISEF) 2023, featured the Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (IN2MF), showcasing an extensive array of designs and collections from local and international designers.
The event provided a platform for over 170 designers to present their creations on a grand scale, demonstrating the richness and diversity of Indonesian modest fashion.
“I’m here at IN2MF to support the Indonesian modest fashion industry. We have engaged numerous designers from Indonesia, around 176, and some international designers, including those from Malaysia. Our involvement extends beyond fashion brands and designers to encompass fashion schools in Indonesia. Thus, the entire ecosystem is actively participating in IN2MF 2023,” said the National Chairman of the Indonesian Fashion Chamber, Ali Charisma.
He stated that the uniqueness of modest fashion in Indonesia was rooted in the country’s cultural background. He emphasised that the strength of Indonesian culture was prominently featured in IN2MF, where every participant presenting must draw inspiration from local textiles or incorporate them into their collections. This requirement is a strong point or identity for the designers to compete in the global market, allowing them to establish a robust identity for Indonesian modest fashion based on handwoven or handmade traditional textiles.
THE POTENTIAL OF INDONESIAN MODEST FASHION
Ali noted the significant potential within the Indonesian modest fashion industry.
“If you look at the number of modest fashion brands in Indonesia, we have the largest modest fashion industry globally. We host numerous events, including IN2MF, Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week, and many others specifically dedicated to modest fashion.
“Therefore, we are confident about the future, believing that Indonesian modest fashion can gain acceptance in the global market, whether it’s on the south or north side of the atmosphere. We are ready to promote our participation globally.”
When discussing his hopes for Indonesian modest fashion, Ali expressed his aspiration for collaboration with the global fashion industry. He envisions that through this collaboration, the Indonesian modest fashion sector can achieve its goal of international recognition more swiftly than initially planned.
In 2021, Indonesia stood at 13th globally for exporting modest clothing, according to data from the Indonesia Bureau of Statistics. The total export value reached US$4.68 billion, indicating a 12.49 per cent increase compared to 2020 when garment exports amounted to approximately US$4.16 billion. –
