Attana Hotels & Resorts’ ‘Sayang Earth’ initiative shows the Group’s commitment to upholding the ESG principles
As a leading Malaysian hospitality management company, Attana Hotels & Resorts oversees a portfolio of hotels, resorts, and golf clubs, prioritising sustainability and delivering unique, customised guest experiences. Attana’s brands – Perdana, Espira, and Villea- are committed to hospitality excellence and shareholder value- each offering distinct hospitality experiences tailored to diverse guest preferences.
According to Group Operations Senior General Manager of Attana Hotels & Resorts, Dato’ Muhammad Taha Zainal, Attana’s sustainability policy is rooted in the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices. The Group aims to minimise the environmental impact of its operations through various initiatives and investments.
“Core principles include environmental conservation, social responsibility, and ethical governance, aligning with its parent company Permodalan Nasional Berhad’s (PNB) sustainability framework,” Taha elaborated.
He believes that upholding sustainability in the hospitality sector is crucial for several reasons, such as reducing hotels’ environmental footprint, promoting the well-being of local communities, and meeting the growing demand for eco-friendly travel options.
Taha also emphasised that sustainable practices ensure the long-term viability of the tourism industry, protect natural resources and enhance the overall guest experience by providing conscientious and responsible hospitality services.
“Attana balances top-notch service with environmental and community ethics by integrating sustainable practices into our daily operations without compromising guest experience. This includes using locally sourced materials, promoting eco-friendly activities, and engaging in community-focused initiatives. The Group’s dedication to high service standards ensures guests enjoy luxurious stays while supporting environmental and social causes.”
ATTANA’S SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES
THE ‘SAYANG EARTH’ INITIATIVE
Attana’s sustainability policy is exemplified through its comprehensive social responsibility programme, ‘Sayang Earth’, which embodies its dedication to environmental stewardship and community welfare. This programme is grounded in four foundational pillars: Healthy Lifestyle, Reduce, Re-use & Recycle (3Rs), Save The Planet, and Community Development.
The Healthy Lifestyle pillar promotes balanced diets and physical exercise among guests and staff. The Reduce, Re-use & Recycle (3Rs) pillar focuses on waste minimisation and resource efficiency. Save The Planet involves efforts to reduce the carbon footprint, such as energy-efficient designs and conservation initiatives. Lastly, Community Development emphasises philanthropy, support for local businesses, and job creation to foster sustainable community growth.
- TREE PLANTING PROGRAMME
In 2023/2024, the Group planted 1,888 new trees, including native species, at Villea Port Dickson to enhance the local landscape and support Malaysia’s Greening Programme. It also organised coastal clean-up and mangrove planting events to preserve and restore vital coastal ecosystems, highlighting its commitment to environmental stewardship.
- ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMME
Attana invests in energy-efficient technologies and practices to reduce its carbon footprint. This includes installing LED lighting, energy-efficient HVAC systems, and implementing energy management systems to monitor and optimise energy usage. The Group also collaborates on a rooftop solar project with Malakoff Corporation Berhad and Cypark Resources Berhad and establishes EV charging stations with Gentari Petronas.
- WATER CONSERVATION INITIATIVE
The Group implements water-saving measures such as low-flow fixtures, rainwater harvesting systems, and guest education campaigns to promote water conservation.
- WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING
Attana conducts recycling programmes for various materials, reduces single-use plastics by using refillable dispensers for room amenities, and replaces plastic containers in F&B with biodegradable alternatives. Additionally, it has replaced plastic water bottles in guest rooms with refillable glass bottles, further reducing plastic waste.
- SUSTAINABLE SOURCING
Attana sources products and services from local suppliers and artisans whenever possible, supporting local economies and reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation. The Group also prioritises sustainable and eco-friendly materials in its procurement processes, such as using certified sustainable wood and organic textiles.
- COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Attana actively engages with local communities through various initiatives, such as supporting local schools, charities, and cultural events. The Group also provides employment opportunities and training programmes for local residents, contributing to social development and empowerment.
THE MUSLIM-FRIENDLY TOURISM
Attana’s involvement in the Muslim-friendly tourism demonstrates its dedication to inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. As the Muslim population grows, this initiative not only supports Attana’s sustainability strategies but also enhances its ability to cater to the specific needs of Muslim travellers. The Group believes the Muslim-friendly tourism and hospitality concept aligns with broader sustainability objectives by advocating responsible tourism practices and fostering cultural appreciation.
In January 2024, Perdana KLCC and Villea Port Dickson jointly hosted the Chinese Imam Familiarisation Trip – Discover Muslim Friendly in Malaysia. This successful Familiarisation Trip forms part of the extensive initiatives led by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and its affiliated agencies – Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) and Tourism Malaysia.
Attana’s commitment to accommodating Muslim travellers is underscored by its pursuit of the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition (MFAR) certifications for its hotels, Perdana KLCC and Perdana Kota Bharu, from ITC. This ongoing renewal certification process highlights the Group’s dedication to offering exceptional Muslim-friendly facilities and services. It aims to create a comfortable and respectful environment that fulfills the needs of Muslim guests.
