Formed in 2018, Rotary Malaysia’s District Action Group on Environmental Sustainability (DAGES) partners with public and private sectors with the objectives to:
• create environmental awareness about issues prevalent in our society and communities and assist in developing projects and initiatives to address these issues through Interact Clubs, Rotaract Clubs and Rotary Clubs
• assist Rotary Clubs in implementing service projects, building awareness, and inspiring action toward environmental sustainability.
• help Rotary Clubs to work and coordinate with local authorities, government agencies, corporates and NGOs towards ecological stewardship for the benefit of their communities
DAGES focuses on four areas: Conservation, including zero waste, wildlife protection, and recycles for life; Signature Parks; Love Our Rivers, and Plant a Tree.
What started as an initiative for Rotary Malaysia has now attracted the general public’s interest, including those from other parts of the world. Its Facebook Group convened more than 1,000 members worldwide within one month of the establishment. The world is starting to take a more profound interest and responsibility in taking better care of the earth.
Recycle For Life has DAGES partnering with schools and corporations to encourage and cultivate the culture of recycling. The programme, initiated by Cenviro and MyKasih Foundation rewards cash through a smart card and has been long-running for many years.
DAGES is also involved in Friends of River (FoR) Sungai Klang initiative with the Rotary Club of Melawati and the local community.
Rotary Peace Park Malaysia at Bestari Jaya, Selangor is a project taken up in collaboration with LUAS (Lembaga Urus Air Selangor). It is a long-term project focusing on the area’s afforestation promoting environmental conservation and education, water resource protection and socio-economic development of the rural communities in the area. DAGES actively champions tree planting and urban farming at the Park as its main activities.
Next in the pipeline, DAGES is organising a Climate Conference on 4 July 2021. It also has lined up monthly webinar series to build momentum and create platforms for dialogues for more awareness and actions.
